Each year, the CDL runs the Chicago Debate Summer Institute (CDSI), a high-intensive two-week summer learning opportunity for 100-150 CDL students. Institute staff includes some of the nation’s most accomplished collegiate and former high school debaters, along with some of the best of our own coaching talent. With the partnership of CPS and private supporters, CDSI is offered with free tuition to low-income students and modest tuition to all others.

2015 CDSI was a Major Success!
Many thanks to this year’s CDSI corporate sponsors, Allstate Insurance Company and Sidley Austin LLP. With their support, we were able to offer CDSI with free tuition to all low-income students.
Domestic surveillance is the timely and relevant topic for teams participating in the Chicago Debate League (CDL) in the 2015-16 school year. At the CDL’s two-week summer camp, the Chicago Debate Summer Institute, almost 100 students got a first look at the domestic surveillance topic and honed their critical thinking, research, communications, and argumentation skills. The camp also featured an engaging poetry workshop and a panel discussion on legal careers for high school students, and some great outdoor activities for middle school students. Students had lots of fun, meeting peers from around the city, participating in team-building activities, and competing in their first tournament of the season.
Among the CPS high schools represented at the debate camp were Bogan, Clark, Hubbard, Kennedy, King, Kenwood, Lane Tech, Legal Prep, Lindblom, Marine, Morgan Park, North Grand, Ogden, Payton, Senn, Solorio, Taft, Urban Prep, Westinghouse, and Whitney Young. CPS middle schools at the camp included Kenwood, Lincoln, Lovett, Nobel, Ogden, Perspectives Middle, Skinner West, Thorp, Whitney Young and Zapata. Several guest schools also sent students to the camp.
